Participants needed for research on improving sleep to prevent adolescent depression

You may be eligible for this study if you: 

  • Have experienced or suspect you have experienced depression or anxiety in your past.

  • Have a child aged 12 to 18 who has never been diagnosed with depression or anxiety.


This study is a randomized controlled trial, meaning if you choose to participate, you and your child will be randomly assigned to either Group A or Group B. Your child would be asked to complete the following tasks:
Group A Tasks:

  • Complete a ~30 minute long interview over the phone

  • Complete online questionnaires and surveys about their mood and sleep patterns

  • Complete 6 brief online learning modules about sleep (up to 1 hour per module)

  • *PARENT TASK* Attend a ~1 hour online learning session

Group B Tasks:

  • Complete a ~30 minute long interview over the phone

  • Complete online questionnaires and surveys about their mood and sleep patterns

  • Read over an informative pamphlet about sleep

To thank you for your time, we would provide you with the following compensation, depending on your group.
Group A Time Commitment and Compensation:

  • Your child's participation will take up to 6.5 hours of their time over the course of 6 weeks (interview, questionnaires, online learning).

  • Your child will receive $150.

  • Your participation will only take ~1 hour.

  • You will receive $25.

Group B Time Commitment and Compensation:

  • Your child’s participation will take around 45 minutes.

  • Your child will receive $50.

  • You will not be asked to complete any tasks, so will not receive any compensation.


If you participate, we would contact your child again in 3 months for a phone interview. Your child does not have to participate in the follow-up if they don’t want to. Your child would receive an additional $50 for completing this interview.
